21 Days Of Baby-Toddler Summer Fun

Day 8: Lead The Way Play

Today’s activity can be done pretty much anywhere. If you have a backyard set up with fun activities for your little one, then feel free to take this outside. This activity can also be done inside with your tot’s favorite toys and activities. On today’s edition of 21 Days of Baby-Toddler Summer Fun, were handing over the reins to the little ones.

Materials Needed:

Toddler Toys

Toddler Activities

Anything they love to do outside or inside

Today’s fun is brought to you by little toddler brains.

That’s right, Toddler take the wheel. It’s time to put that phone down, take a gulp of that coffee (or wine), and get down to your little one’s level. Today, we are doing everything that they want to do. If that means singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider for 30 minutes straight, then get your game face on! It’s Spidey time! Your little one will love having control of the play options, and they have your full attention. What a great opportunity to stoke the leadership fires. Honestly, can’t I guarantee this as an outcome? No, I am not a professional, but it’s sounds like a pretty good time anyway.

Set UP

To set up this activity, make all toys and fun activities available to your little one. Lay out the toys from the toy box, set up the kiddie pool, dig out the soccer balls, fill up a bucket of water, bring out the crayons and coloring book, take the books off the shelf, put their favorite movie in the DVD player, and set up the finger paints. Create stations throughout the house and then let your toddler roll. Follow them as they bounce from one thing to the next and play with them. Drive that train around the tracks 1,000 times, sit in the water with them, kick the ball with them. Do this for at least an hour, or longer. Give them your undivided attention. Let them decide the game, the toy, the activity.

Your Task

Sing ring around the rosy fifty times as they spin in circles and make themselves dizzy. Color little fish and adorable puppies together. Run around in the grass. Catch them at the bottom of the slide 38 times, push them on the swings as they squeal. Don’t ask them to move on to another activity, don’t tell them you are done after the 65th time, and don’t get them to do something you enjoy more. This is their time. Of course, make sure all safety and hazard rules are still being applied. After all, safety is always important.

What To Expect

Your little one will love all of the attention and get excited over being able to choose what you two get to play. What a perfect way to spend the day with your little being. How exciting it must be for this little one to know that you enjoy their special activity as much as they do.

Take It In

Take a thousand pictures, soak up all of their giggles, and take in the sweet summer day with your little totters. Then snuggle the crap out of them as you both take a well deserved nap…. No? Okay. *Shrug.

Finishing Up

Once the hour is up, you are free to go back to your neglected chores and things to do. Leave out all those toys and activities. Your toddler will be free to distract themselves while you desperately catch up. Or, if your having too much fun, forget all of those things that are not getting done. Enjoy your time with your little one.
I would love to hear how your Lead The Way Play turned out. Drop your funny but realistic stories below in the comments.
